Dear Janney Parents:
I am writing to inform you of changes in JED’s rates that the JED Board recently approved that will go into
effect starting in January. This is the first time in 10 years that JED has raised our rates and the current JED rates are
the lowest of our peer school’s programs. While we wish that we could continue on this tradition, our current financial
situation, as explained below, requires we increase rates. Starting in January, JED’s rates will increase 15% for all
categories. In August 2010, we will again adjust rates by another 10% over today’s rates unless the financial situation
allows us to postpone that increase.
The new rates will be the following. These rates do not include the one-time-a-year fee of $70 for half-day and
full day JED coverage. Since this has already been paid for the year, we have not incorporated into these figures. Number of days attending | 2 days | 3 days | 4 days | 5 days | Monthly
fee 1st child | $144 | $167 | $201 | $224 | 2nd child (20% discount) | $115 | $134 | $161 | $179 | Additional sibling (40% discount) | $86 | $100 | $121 | $134 | Semester fee 1st child: | $684 | $793 | $955 | $1,064 | 2nd child (20% discount) | $547 | $635 | $764 | $851 | Additional sibling (40% discount) | $410 | $476 | $573 | $638 |
There are a number of reasons that the JED Board needed to
make this rate increase decision. There is no one single line item that is driving this decision. It is the combination of
increases in a variety of areas that combine together to produce current costs—and those projected for the program over
the next 5 years—that are higher than the rate of growth in revenue from increases in student enrollment. I would like
to share with you some of these areas.
·
Staff count – Staff is JED’s largest expense. JED has increased our
staff to child ratio in the last few years to improve the care and supervision we provide to children. At the same time, our
staff performance and retention rate are excellent. The impact is that raises and other bonuses when combined with the increase
in head count have outpaced the revenue generated by the growth in the student population. · Insurance – like all businesses, JED’s insurance rates and other operating fees have increased over
the past five years. ·
Nutrition—we have increased the nutrition budget to meet the standards we
know our parents want and our children need. ·
Enrichment Classes—while non-JED students pay for these classes, JED students as part of
their fee can take 1 or 2 classes per semester depending on their enrollment level. Over the last three years, we have expanded
the number of classes and the frequency of the more popular course.
Looking forward, JED is committed to further expanding and
enhancing the quality of these offerings. We want to be sure that we have the funds to do these things. Looking forward, the JED Board sees a number of opportunities to continue to improve the program.
As a number of these will not begin until next year, we felt it was important to raise rates now only for those components
that current enrollees receive. Hence the additional increase that is planned for next fall. These adjustments will help us
meet our financial shortfall, allow us to continue to improve the program, and brings JED to the mid-point of our peers in
terms of program cost.
There is more information on the JED Web site, including
a comparison of current to future rates. As always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any Board
member or Glen. Michael Cervino, Chair

Greetings from the Parent Board of the Janney Extended Day (JED) program. We are
writing to re-introduce you to the JED program, which has served the Janney community for more than two decades.
JED offers children an enriching after-school experience while giving their parents the security of knowing that their
children are under the care of experienced, responsible adults. The afternoon program’s regular hours are from 3:15 to 6:00 p.m., with extended care available until 6:30 p.m. for an additional fee when needed. A typical day at JED goes something like
this:
·
When school ends at 3:15 p.m., children going to JED meet in the Janney auditorium. Janney teachers
know which kids go to JED and will walk Kindergarten students to the auditorium.
·
In the auditorium, JED staff check in the children and
then accompany them to the playground (weather permitting), where they play for about 45 minutes. JED maintains
a staff-child ratio of no more than 1 to 10, so children are carefully supervised on the playground. ·
During playground time, the staff and children split
up and some stay at Janney while the rest walk across the street to Iona Senior Service, located at the corner of Albemarle and 42nd
Street. JED has three quiet rooms for homework, a room for arts and crafts, a computer
room, and a dance/aerobic room for classes or special events.
·
All of the children enjoy a mid-afternoon snack and then
move into a structured activity. Younger children often are engaged in very popular and creative arts and crafts projects.
Older children are strongly encouraged to finish their homework before shifting to other activities, and they receive homework
help from JED staff as needed.
·
Parents can pick their children up at any time –
but many of us are greeted with howls of protest when we arrive “too early” and try to pull our children away
from the fun! A sign-out procedure ensures that children leave only with parents or other authorized adults.
What’s unique and wonderful about JED is that it offers students a chance to interact and to forge
relationships with caring adults in a non‑school setting. Many of the younger children love getting to know and making
friends with older kids they see every day at school. They also love JED’s field trips, holiday parties, and special
events – the annual JED Fashion and Talent Show is always a big hit!
At the same time, JED helps parents with the daunting
challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities. In addition to reliable after-school care, JED offers full‑day
and half‑day programs on days (typically once each month) when D.C. public schools are closed, or close early, for professional
development activities and teacher conferences. For parents who need coverage prior to the start of school each day, JED also
provides before-school care beginning at 7:30 a.m. Finally, JED has frequently arranged for special enrichment classes during normal JED hours that JED children can
attend without additional fees.
We encourage you to apply early if you want to be guaranteed a place for your child for the coming school
year. The JED website, www.janneyextendedday.com, provides more information and photos of the program, parent testimonials, as well as a schedule of fees.
The enrollment materials can be obtained in the Janney school office or by leaving a message for Glen Sitney, JED’s
director, at (202) 362‑2685. Tuition for the afternoon program currently ranges from $144 a month for two days a week
to $224 a month for five days a week. JED offers full and partial scholarships in cases of financial need
to the extent that the program’s resources permit.
We have found JED to be a wonderful
place for our children. We hope you will consider JED as an option for meeting your child care and after-school
enrichment needs.
Sincerely,
Parent Board of Janney
Extended Day
